Signs of the Time
Traditional
sign writing maybe a dying art, but one thing for sure is that Mick Head, who established
his poster and sign writing business in 1989, is still serving the local community with his
expertise.
When he first started up, it was common practice for retail businesses to advertise aggressively,
so he was kept busy producing hand written posters, usually the bright dayglo type, which
helped to advertise and promote their wares. Sadly, in some ways, the bold, punchy poster
creations are not in demand these days, and have been replaced mostly by bland computer
generated designs. The hand written variety had its own unique character and if produced well
would always impact on the reader better than anything else.
It was inevitable that Mick moved with the times, and is now more involved with producing shop
signs for windows and fascias, vehicle graphics, a-boards and banners.
At present his work is mainly generated from the Crystal Palace area. He explained that this
might be because of the apparent quick turn round of new businesses in the triangle at the
moment. As well as building up his growing repeat customer base, he is always willing to offer
help with promotional ideas for people just starting up in business.
Mick has not quite thrown his paint brushes away yet. You might catch him one day painting a
sign or ‘splashing’ colour onto that ‘old fashioned’ dayglo paper, creating a poster for the local
church, but with his new computer always nearby!
